Is anyone truly happy with the way today’s health care system works? What can we as empowered consumers do to be better informed- and prepared- to manage our health care, especially when a medical issue arises?

Dr. Halee Fischer-Wright

On December 13th I spoke with Dr. Halee Fischer Wright, author of “Back To Balance: The Art, Science and Business of Medicine,” who pulls back the curtain on the medical business to reveal how doctors work and how we, as their clients-patients, can better communicate with them to ensure we have a more positive experience.

Here are three questions Halee says you should be prepared to ask your medical practitioner during every visit:

  1. Why am I here today? 50% of the time no one fully understands the purpose of the doctor’s visit!
  2. If this visit is to be successful, what needs to be done?
  3. What other questions should I be asking you in regard to my condition?

I am adding a 4th question for you:

How necessary is a follow up visit and how often do I need to see you moving forward, if at all?

My experience with doctors has been that many of my follow up visits were completely unnecessary. Ask “Why is this visit necessary and what is its purpose?” before wasting your time and money.
