Sex is supposed to feel good. Right?

But for 20 to 45 percent of postmenopausal women sex is downright painful. There’s a medical term for it: dyspareunia  It can happen to many women after childbirth or during and after treatment for an illness such as cancer. It is a frequent complain among post menopausal women due to low estrogen.

Some refer to it as  “sexual dysfunction.” I don’t believe it means you are dysfunctional. You may want sex, but it may be painful due to physical changes in your vagina such as extreme dryness and atrophy.  Some women suffer in silence. Others abstain from sex.  Neither are the best solution. A healthy sex life is an important part of your overall health both physically and emotionally.

Here are some tips to help you:

  1. Perform daily Kegel exercises to strengthen your vaginal muscles. Here are some easy instructions.
  2. Make sure you and your partner allow time for foreplay. Sex is is about giving and receiving pleasure and not reaching a goal. Make your Big O about enjoying “overall pleasure” and not  just achieving an “orgasm.”
  3. Consider pleasure enhancers such as vibrators and aromatic love oils.  Scent is a powerful aphrodisiac. So is light, loving touch.
  4. Lubricants help with dryness but be picky about what you put inside you. Look for a line that is all natural with no parabens or other petrochemicals that can disrupt the delicate PH balance of your vagina.
  5. There are other devices such as vaginal wands and the  that are subtle and helpful ways to prep your vaginal/clitoral region to make it more receptive to sex.

This mother of 4 refused to let painful sex push the pause button on her pleasure:

Rather than just endure the painful sex she was experiencing with her husband of over 30 years, Wendy Strager decided to do something about it. She started making soothing, lubricating oils- she calls them “love oils”- from herbs in her garden. Eventually she launched her company, Good Clean Love, whose mission is to “increase the quantity and quality of loving relationships in the world.” Wendy’s product line is all natural with absolutely no petrochemicals which she says are found in many lubricants and can damage the sensitive tissues in the vagina and rectal areas.

Since founding Good Clean Love Wendy has been an outspoken advocate on women’s sexual health and well-being and offers workshops to help people improve the quality of their personal relationships.

Because:

LOVE SHOULD HEAL AND BOND YOU. LOVE SHOULD NOT HURT YOU.
