Just Because It’s Good for You Doesn’t Mean It’s Right for You

Just Because It’s Good for You Doesn’t Mean It’s Right for You

I am pitched on a range of products and protocols that are intended to be good for you. They claim to improve your health and well-being. I keep an open mind, but I always peer into the science behind the statements. I question, “How does this work for women of all ages and backgrounds and when does it not appropriate for someone?” I’ve been schooled in the “not one diet fits all” theory of healthy eating. There are general guidelines to follow: eat more plants, leaner protein, and better fats; consume less sugar and simple carbohydrates; avoid processed foods; drink

Don’t be Blindsided  Because You Lack Long-Term Vision

Don’t be Blindsided  Because You Lack Long-Term Vision

Sometimes we’re so busy moving through life just getting the work done in front of us that we don’t see what lies ahead. Long-term vision is important to help you reach your life or career goals, but too often we’re wearing blinders. So, what happens? You can get blindsided. You wake up one day and realize time slipped away and you are further from where you hoped to be. Maybe you find your career has languished, or a relationship falters, or finances are stagnant. Whatever it is, you wonder, “can I ever get back on track?” Of course, you can.

More Smart Sip Tips & New Regulations to Note

Talk about raising awareness of from you lips to your hips! While everyone was enjoying their Mint Juleps to cheer on the Kentucky Derby and Margaritas for Cinco de Mayo last week, a new Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A) regulation was rolling out requiring restaurants and other dining and drinking establishments with more than twenty locations to list calories counts for cocktails, wine and beer. The guidelines were announced earlier this year. You can watch the recent NBC News report here. Like the calorie counts we see on menu items at similar establishments, these are intended as helpful guidelines to educate consumers about what

Getting Hygge With It

Getting Hygge With It

Just around Groundhog Day I find myself in a self-imposed winter exile. I stay home, write, read, practice yoga and eat simply. But by week’s end I usually have Saturday Night Cabin Fever and feel restless. It’s especially hard around Mardi Gras (Feb 13 this year) when I long to prance in the streets with my New Orleans pals sans heavy coat and scarf. I enviously follow friends on Facebook who are living or traveling in warmer climates snapping selfies in their sarongs and sun dresses Yes, my MOJO has FOMO (fear of missing out). That said, a recent article I read in Time Magazine says my quiet country life is The New Thing. It’s cool

It’s Time To Clean Up the Dirty Talk

I just returned from attending EXPO East, a giant natural products convention in Baltimore. The first item I tasted was pureed baby food made from boiled, strained vegetables and fruits (but not mixed together) created by a mom (naturally). It was pretty good!  I walked the aisles tasting gut- blasting tonics, fermented juices, root based beverages, mushroom teas and numerous probiotic foods that promised to help clean out my stomach and intestines. I sipped paleo coffee mixed with butter to add “necessary fat” and sampled plenty of reduced fat foods. I nibbled on fiber rich bars and smoothies offering to “help me go.” I tasted foods promising to help boost

A Diet Worth Giving a Try

A Diet Worth Giving a Try

As a wine and food professional I grapple weekly with temptation and managing my diet. Attending dinners, lunches and wine tastings are part of the job, and I enjoy it, especially when the food and drink are good. But it’s hard to maintain your weight, and we all know eating well is the best defense to stay healthy along with regular exercise. So, I’ve devised “The Try It Diet.” Just give everything a try at least once. Take a smaller portion or a few sips. Then push away the plate or don’t give yourself a refill or second helping. It

Stop Holding It In!

Tuck it in. Suck it in. Hold it in. How many times have you heard, read or said this? Well, I say do the opposite: Let it out! I recently interviewed movement specialist Mary Derbyshire for my radio show Fearless Fabulous YOU! The focus was staying agile at any age.  Here is the link. Mary discussed how to sit, stand and move your body without overtaxing it. One thing I learned is that we tend to hunch and constrict our bodies rather than stay loose and limber. I  realized during the discussion that too many of us are too tightly wound

Managing Pain Safely & GMO Foods: Pros and Cons- Jan 23- Fearless Fabulous You!

Pain is Epidemic in the USA The saying “No pain. No gain” may apply to some forms of exercise, but when pain is chronic there is a lot to lose in terms of quality of life. How To Get Your Glow Going- The Natural Way

How To Get Your Glow Going- The Natural Way

Do you glow? I don’t mean in the irradiated sense or sparkled up with bling bling. I mean a glow that is your natural radiance. The “glow” is when your skin is clear; your hair shines, your eyes are  bright; your energy is strong. You exude vitality and brilliance that cannot be purchased in a bottle or wrapped around your body. Clothes, jewelry and makeup can enhance your glow, but they cannot create it or replace it. Many say being in love and having a healthy fulfilling sex life helps. I agree, because your glow comes from inner peace, a sense
